Island rivals hit the court with Chargers vs Mariners

The 天美传媒 Chargers women鈥檚 basketball team tips off the 2021/22 season at home on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6pm against island rivals, Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners.

With no competition last season due to COVID-19, the Chargers remained resilient by spending much of the past 18 months in the weight room, practising on the court, and in the gym honing their skills so they would emerge even stronger.聽

This season, the team welcomes a group of talented rookies in聽Morgan Boot聽(Bow Valley High School),聽Ashyana Kumar聽(W.J. Mouat Secondary),聽Reese Manns聽(Claremont Secondary),聽Allie Brinton(Lambrick Park Secondary),聽Allison Bobroske聽(Lambrick Park Secondary),聽Tegan Michel聽(Oak Bay High School),聽Julia Forsyth聽(Crescent Heights), and聽Maren Bilsky聽(F.H. Collins Secondary).

Chargers women鈥檚 basketball Head Coach Justin Thiessen observations about this year鈥檚 rookies:

  • 叠辞辞迟听earned a RBC Own the Podium Scholarship and spent a year training in rowing at the University of Victoria. She鈥檚 an incredible athlete with a giant wingspan;
  • 碍耻尘补谤听is a real baller whose work ethic is second to none and she鈥檚 a dead eye shooter;
  • 搁别别蝉别听is a pure point guard who will some day be a star in the league;
  • 础濒濒颈别听is an athlete that does things you have to see to believe;
  • 础濒濒颈蝉辞苍听comes from a family of athletes and has siblings playing sports down south;
  • 惭颈肠丑别濒听brings all the intangibles that you can鈥檛 teach and is an incredibly unselfish high IQ player;
  • 闯耻濒颈补听is a terror on defense; and
  • 惭补谤别苍听has an incredibly high upside and also comes from a family of professional athletes.

Thiessen adds:聽鈥淎lthough we are a young team, as soon as the players gain more confidence and realize how good they are, the Chargers women鈥檚 basketball team is looking good for many years.鈥

Providing leadership are University of Winnipeg transfer,聽Chelsea Espenberg聽(Kelowna Secondary), and veteran聽Maddie Manns聽(Claremont Secondary) who were selected by their teammates to co-captain the squad.

2019/20 Team Rookie Award recipient聽Sadie McMillan-Stowards聽(Oak Bay High) returns to the court along side聽Boot聽at centre.

厂颈蝉迟别谤蝉,听Reese听补苍诲听Maddie Manns聽come from a very talented athletic family (one brother plays collegiate down south and the other plays in the National Lacrosse League) and bring such a fantastic knowledge about the game to the court.

After spending two seasons on the Chargers women鈥檚 volleyball team,聽Mady Hautz聽(Campbell Collegiate) made the switch to join the basketball team this year. 鈥淪he has a high IQ, is a great communicator, is very versatile, and flexible,鈥 says Thiessen.

Leading the women鈥檚 basketball team is returning Head Coach, Justin Thiessen and Assistant Coaches Abbey Gillette, James Neilson, and Luc van Hanuse. Jordan Smith has also joined the team as their Athletic Therapist.

鈥淭he PACWEST league is strong for women鈥檚 basketball this season,鈥 adds Thiessen. 鈥淚t鈥檚 entertaining, fast-paced, in-your-face type of basketball.鈥

Catch the Chargers on Friday, Nov. 5 at their home opener against the VIU Mariners. The women鈥檚 team kicks of action at 6:00pm, while the men鈥檚 team tips off at 8:00pm. Both games are at the Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence (PISE) at the Interurban campus.
