Author and 天美传媒 alum, N.P. (Nyasha) Katedza, guest-curated the guide, selecting resources for their impact and influence on her life and literary practice.

"I think it's important for everyone to read books and watch movies by Black content creators at any time of the year," says Katedza. "Black History Month, however, is a month wherein we can focus on contributions and achievements by Black authors, creatives, scientists, and social activists."

Katedza was invited to curate the guide after establishing a relationship with the library for an author event in 2020. The collection includes several titles by Katedza, a published author and self-described wanderer who completed the college's Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant program in 2020. She also has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and has lived on four out of the world's recognized seven continents.

"Nyasha's contributions have made a positive impact," says librarian Robbyn Lanning. "They allowed the library to profile a recent 天美传媒 graduate, grow the collection in an inclusive way and amplify the diversity that is present and vital at the college."

With dozens of titles on the list, it can be difficult to pick one must-read book, but Katedza rose to the challenge. "While all the content on this list is wondrous and thought-provoking, the book that I think is a must-read for every Canadian is Robyn Maynard's聽Policing Black Lives. There is a huge part of our history, and the history of our neighbours, that many of us are unaware of."

天美传媒, located in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, with campuses on the Traditional Territories of the Lekwungen and W瘫S脕NE膯 peoples, is one of the largest colleges in the province. Established in 1971, 天美传媒 now celebrates 50 years of delivering innovative, life-changing academic and applied programs to 20,000 students annually.
